What to see by foot: Venice

Venice is a walker's heaven, with no traffic on the streets other than thousands of pairs of feet. In fact, although there are some must-see sights, a great deal of the pleasure to be had in this city is from walking through the ancient streets and squares while soaking up the city's unique atmosphere. But if you have only a short time in Venice, then a visit to St Mark's Square should be at the top of your list.

The pigeon-thronged square was described as one of the most beautiful sights in Europe by Napoleon when he entered it in triumph in 1797. St Mark's Square is dominated by the Basilica San Marco, one of the world's greatest and most elaborately adorned churches. Displayed here are the four life-size bronze horses stolen from Constantinople when the city was attacked by crusaders in 1204.

As you cross the busy square, pause to listen to the numerous quartets of musicians playing classical music to the tourists. The other major draw on the square is Doge's Palace which was the seat of Venice's rulers. The works of art contained in the throne room and the old parliament are breathtaking. Highlights here include the famous gold staircase designed to awe visiting ambassadors.

A major draw for visitors is to follow in Casanova's footsteps and walk across the Bridge of Sighs from the palace to the dank dungeon on the other side. Tourists can take this journey and see the cells where the famous lover was imprisoned; although, unlike many who took the journey in the past, you can make your way back through the palace to the square when finished.
