Mini guide to Verona

Verona, situated in the Veneto region, is one of Italy's loveliest towns, rich
in archaeological sites and featuring a beautiful medieval centre. The Roman Arena,
where concerts and operas are performed in the summer, is the city's grandest
sight (original capacity 20,000), but the so-called 'Juliet's balcony' is also
a principal port on the Shakespearian tourist trail.
Take time to stroll around the old narrow lanes and soak up the traditional
atmosphere of the city, in particular the via Cappello with its Casa di Giulietta,
the fictional home of Juliet. Verona's other sites of historical interest include:
the charming San Fermo, Sant'Anastasia, San Pietro Martire and Duomo churches;
the ancient Porta Leoni gate; the ornate Scaliger Tombs; and the magnificent
Loggia del Consiglio and Domus Mercatorum buildings.
The largest and most southerly of Italy's great lakes, Garda, is a short distance
from Verona and makes for a great day out. Take a picnic, walk in the mountains
or wander around the charming Roman spa town of Sirmione, with its cobbled streets,
elegant cafés and fairytale castle of Rocca Scaligera.
To the north of the city, the sweep of the river valley and the pre-Alpine
climate combine to create an impressive mountainous landscape that continues
all the way to the spectacular Dolomite mountains. To the south, by contrast,
extends the great Lombardy plain, a flat expanse as far as the eye can see,
repeatedly cut by the massive sway of the River Po (Italy's longest and most
famous river).
Verona's history dates back to ancient times when the Indo-European population
settled at the place where the course of the river slowed, watering the fertile
hills that surrounded it. The many great powers that have ruled Verona during
its long history have all left their mark on the city and today, evidence of
their presence and influence can be seen in the architecture, art, cuisine and
attitude of the community.
Verona's airport can be reached via connections from Milan or Rome, which are
served by most major carriers. Shuttle services into the city are convenient
and reliable.
