What to see by foot: Verona

Verona is relatively small and most of its main sightseeing highlights can be
covered easily on foot. Make your first stop the Roman Arena, Verona's most famous
landmark. This 2,000-year-old elliptical amphitheatre, built of pale Veronese
limestone, is the backdrop for Italy's most theatrical open-air operatic festival,
which runs from June 21 to September 1. Classics like Madame Butterfly and Bizet's
Carmen, performed in the superb open-air setting, make a visit to the arena a
truly memorable occasion.
Another must-see is the Casa de Giulietta, the fictional home of Juliet Capulet,
Shakespeare's heroine from his epic romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Her so-called
tomb lies in a crypt below the cloisters of San Francesco al Corso - a museum
devoted to Shakespeare and 16th century Verona.
A treat for art-lovers, Castelvecchio is an innovative and imaginative art
gallery set in a 14th century fortress. Here you'll discover medieval and Renaissance
works of art carved into the walls.
To appreciate the buzz of city life, head to the Piazza delle Erbe. Verona's
central square is dotted with cheerful market stalls and flanked by impressive
palaces. At the northern end of the square, the Marble Column bears the lion
of St Mark, the emblem of Venetian authority. Also of interest is the Torre
del Lamberti, the city's 84-metre bell tower.
