Well-known all over the world as the town of the great architect Andrea Palladio,
Vicenza is rich in art and tradition. The city features architectural jewels
that make it famous such as: the Palladiana Basilica in Piazza dei Signori,
the Olimpico Theatre and the Rotonda Villa. Vicenza also accommodates dozens
of artistic masterpieces in its numerous churches and sumptuous palaces. In
Piazza Duomo, under Palazzetto Proti, the Roman Cryptoporticus, part of an ancient
patrician house, should not be missed.
In 1994 UNESCO included the town of Vicenza on its World Heritage List, recognizing
it as a town rich in history and with one of the most important artistic heritages
in Italy.
Vicenza is known around the world as the city of gold. Every year three international
trade fairs are organized (January, June and September), attracting thousands
of people from all over the world. The Vicenza Province is one of the main centres
in Italy for the working of this precious metal.
Apart from being a historical wonderland, Vicenza is also an agricultural,
commercial, and highly diversified industrial centre. Manufactures include machinery,
chemicals, timber, and processed food. Vicenza is also a wealthy city, with
plenty of art, good shopping and excellent restaurants too keep you busy. Vicenza's
cuisine is rich in specialities of a variety of tastes that are beyond description:
from the world famous dried salt-cured cod to its excellent quality wines.
