What to see by foot: Luxembourg

For a country its size, Luxembourg offers a wealth of sights for visitors to
enjoy. The city of Luxembourg is compact in size; walking is the best way to
explore it to the fullest and enjoy the culinary delights as well.
The city of Luxembourg is no more than an hour's drive away from anywhere in
the country. To get a feel for medieval Luxembourg, explore the amazing Pétrusse
Casemates and Bock Casemates. Luxembourg is a Grand Duchy, so a visit to the
Palace of the Grand Dukes is a must. This magnificent palace shows off the splendour
and opulence of the Grand Duchy. The city is full of scenic viewpoints and parks,
a delight for any visitor.
Most of the sights of the city are located along the southern side of the old
town, which is centred around two large pedestrian-only squares: Place d'Amres
and Place Guillaume. The squares are full of quaint restaurants and cafés,
and are a great place to sample the Luxembourg cuisine. Otherwise, dining at
the Le Normandy restaurant in the Grand Hotel Cravat is considered to be the
height of culinary delight. Shoppers should not miss the market days at the
Place Guillaume, every Wednesday and Saturday.
After a long day of walking, why not indulge in riding the Pétrusse
Express, a 'petit train touristique' (a little tourist train) that runs on rubber
wheels. It traverses the city and stops at all the important sites; and is an
excellent way to explore the city if you are pressed for time or just want to
take the weight off your feet.
If you are lucky enough to be visiting Luxembourg during the National Day on
June 23, you can witness the amazing National Day Parade and watch the Grand
Duke review his guards with all the pomp and opulence of the past.
The ultra-modern 'Euro Zone' of the city is located on the Kirchberg plateau,
northeast of the city centre. Here you will find the headquarters of the European
Council of Ministers, the European Investment Bank, European Commission and
European Court of Justice, as well as other related institutions. The buildings
are spectacular and, for anyone interested in the European Union, a must-visit.
