Mini guide to Bugibba
Located on the northwestern coast of Malta, Bugibba is one of the most frequented
spots on the island due to its beautiful beaches and promenade. Its central location
also adds to its appeal.
Bugibba's main attraction is the beach area, which offers a sweeping bay with
golden sand and plenty of parasols to keep off the fierce midday sun. The well-paved,
tree-lined promenade offers an ideal opportunity for strolling day or night,
and has many restaurants and gallerias.
Bugibba is not without historical interest; at the end of the peninsula is
a small coastal battery surrounding an old watchtower, which is worth seeing.
Farther inland is a prehistoric temple. Although in a poor state of preservation,
this temple is unique in that it was decorated with carvings of fish. The bas-reliefs
are now preserved in the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta.
Surfing is popular when the wind gets up, and scuba diving is also enjoyable
in the crystal clear waters off the coast. The main area for nightlife is centred
round the town square, where you will find many cafés, bars and the occasional
nightclub.
If you have a car, there are some wonderful drives to be had, but take care
on the often treacherous mountain roads. The island's capital, Valletta, offers
a wealth of activities with its numerous museums, European art and architecture,
and superb shopping opportunities. Nearby Sliema is perfect for exploring on
foot and has many historic sights.
Malta International Airport at Luqa is about 20kms southeast of Bugibba; from
there, buses go to Valletta City Gate regularly, taking 15 minutes. Another
connecting bus will take you to Bugibba. There is also a full taxi service to
Bugibba, with fares regulated by meter. Daily ferries connect Libya with Malta;
while ferries from Catania (Sicily) to Malta run between April and September.
A high-speed catamaran service is also available from Sicilian ports twice a
week.
