Situated on the northeastern coast of Malta, adjacent to Sliema, is the lively
resort of St Julian's Bay. Popular with affluent Maltese and European tourists,
this resort vibrates in the later hours with the unrelenting beats of the many
bars and discos.
In spite of the island's reputation as a haven for debauchery and sleepless
nights, it still retains some of its former fishing village languor. Spinola
Bay is the best place to go if you want to enjoy the peace and quiet that existed
before the advent of multi-storey hotels.
Head to St George's Bay for the best beaches and swimming. Various water sports
are available, as well as horseback riding and beach volleyball. For shopping,
stroll over to Paceville, where there's a wide range of boutiques and handicraft
shops.
At night, the town awakes, resurrecting the tourist population. Discos and
bars are ubiquitous, thumping tunes into the early morning, while at Dragonara
Point, a casino illuminates the darkness. There are also some cinemas in the
town, offering the latest Hollywood fare.
Local excursions include daytrips to the historic town of Valletta, with its
lit bastions shining every evening. The resort of Sliema is connected to the
point of St Julian's Bay, and here you'll find an older crowd enjoying the relaxed
atmosphere.
Mainland Europe has the best access to Malta. Air Malta has flights between
the main island and a host of other European cities. It also has flights between
Malta and Cairo, Dubai, Damascus and Tunis. Other carriers with service to Malta
include Alitalia, KLM, Lufthansa, Swissair and Tunisavia. Malta International
Airport is located about 12.9kms from St Julian's Bay; buses, taxis and rental
cars are available to take you to your final destination.
