Travelling to Marrakech
If you are travelling by car from Europe, the best route would be through Spain,
as a variety of car ferries run from Algericas to Tangier and Ceuta in Morocco.
Road travel through Algeria is not recommended, as the country's internal instability
has rendered it unsafe. The land border between Algeria and Morocco was closed
in 1994.
Travelling by train from Europe is a relatively cheap and efficient means of
reaching Morocco. This route would involve utilising the Algericas-Tangier ferry
as a connection between European and Moroccan train networks. Morocco's Office
National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) operates one of the most modern rail systems
in Africa, linking most of the major towns.
From London's Victoria Coach Station, there is a Eurolines/Iberbus connection
to Algeciras, which takes two days and makes use of the Algeciras-Tangier ferry.
It leaves every Monday and Friday, and an adult return ticket costs between
£200-£240. There are also regular international coach services to
Morocco from Paris and other European cities. The local bus system runs between
most towns in Morocco.
Marrakech has its own airport, Aeroport de la Menara, which has direct air
links to Geneva, London and Paris. Alternatively, it is possible to fly into
Ouarzazate, Agadir and Casablanca, and arrange connecting flights onwards to
Marrakech or continue by road or rail. The local airline, Royal Air Maroc has
an international network that includes main European cities, as well as Montréal
and New York. Most major European airlines also fly into Morocco.
Aeroport de la Menara is situated 5kms southwest of Marrakech. The number 11
bus is scheduled to run every half-hour to the main market square, Djemma El
Fna, but it is notoriously unreliable. Petits taxis or grands taxis are a better
option, though they sometimes overcharge.
There are ferries from Sète (France), and Algeciras and Almería
(Spain) to northern Morocco.
