What to see by foot: Marrakech
The allure of Marrakech lies primarily in the vibrant life force that pulses through
its streets, and in the sensational backdrop that is created by the majestic peaks
of the Atlas mountain range, towering over the city in the distance.
Both the medina (old town) and its newer counterpart, the French-built Gueliz,
are bustling with activity. The medina, mostly in ruins at the beginning of
the century, was substantially renovated and expanded during the era of French
rule. It contains a number of attractions which are concentrated in the spider
web of alleys that surround the local market square, Djemma El Fna.
Every night, the square becomes a hive of exotic activity, with acrobats, musicians,
snake charmers, drummers, comedians and storytellers congregating here to host
a bizarre and compelling spectacle that is not to be missed.
From this central point, it is easy to explore the medina's historical treasures,
as most of these are clustered in the close vicinity. The city's trademark attraction,
the Koutobia Minaret, lies just to the west of Djemma El Fna. Constructed in
1150, it is 70m high and dominates the city. The ruins of the El Badi palace
are a reminder of the lifestyle that the city's rulers once lived at the height
of their power. El Badi means 'incomparable', and what remains of the palace
is testament to this indeed.
The Agdal, Menara and Majorelle Gardens are a sight for sore eyes, with their
vivid colours, lush vegetation and shady palms. The most impressive of these
is the Jardin Menara, where acres of orchards and olive groves envelop a reservoir-sized
ornamental pool and pavilion.
The Saadian tombs are the most popular tourist sight in Marrakech. The walls
of the burial chamber are embellished with exquisite, delicate carvings fit
for the Sultans who were laid to rest there.
Wander through the Marrakech souks for an experience rich with the sights,
sounds and smells of the city. The alleys are crammed full of quaint shops,
apothecary stalls, draped carpets and interesting locals.
