What to see by car: Marrakech
If you have access to a car, you can visit some of the other fascinating destinations
that Morocco has to offer. Rabat, which is now the country's capital, is a clean,
open city filled with trees, flowers and beautiful ruins from all eras of Moroccan
history. Located right in the centre of the town is the Royal Palace, and directly
opposite this stands the King's personal mosque - a fine example of Islamic architecture.
The city's most renowned site is the Tour Hassan, an unfinished minaret of
the great mosque. Its construction was brought to a halt by an earthquake in
1755. Another interesting excursion is to Kasbah des Oudaias, a former palace
which is now a museum of traditional art. It has a unique position on a hill
overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Rabat's fabulous coastline. Remember to visit
the lively Soukia Street, which is filled with traditional foundouks (cafés),
and Consules Street, where peddlers sell their varied wares.
Most visitors to Morocco are eager to visit the legendary city of Casablanca.
In fact, the once-inspirational city was in deep decline until the French remodelled
it with wide, tree-lined streets, public parks and Moorish civic buildings.
The old town has several historical and architectural sights, and the Hassan
II Mosque situated here is one of the biggest in the world.
Casablanca is also blessed with a splendid coastline, which abounds with opportunities
for leisure water sports, including: waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing and swimming.
Fez can be reached via a breathtaking drive through the Atlas Mountains from
Marrakech. Its maze of ancient streets and dilapidated splendour immediately
whisk you back hundreds of years in time. Items of interest here are the Royal
Palace and the fascinating Medina, one of the largest medieval cities in the
world.
