Mini guide to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of the coolest cities in Europe, famed for its tolerance of
soft drugs and sex; but it also offers higher pursuits such as classical music,
superb museums, good food from all over the world and very friendly people.
It also boasts a delightful 'village' atmosphere among its pretty canals, offering
a unique city experience.
A visit to this beautiful city is sometimes like taking a walk in the 17th
century. The centre of Amsterdam has a lot of charming architecture dating from
this period and is easily explored on foot.
Virtually all the main areas and cities of interest are within a short drive
of Amsterdam. The country has an excellent road network and driving can be very
easy, as long as the major cities are avoided around rush hour times. Rotterdam,
to the south, is as architecturally stimulating as Amsterdam but a lot less
crowded, and The Hague is a must-see for its museums and nightlife.
Amsterdam was originally built on the shores of the saltwater Zuiderzee, but
as a result of centuries of land-reclamation projects the city now borders the
freshwater of IJsselmeer. The centre of Amsterdam is shaped like a horseshoe,
surrounded by three famous canals called the Herengracht, Keizersgracht and
Prinsengracht. At the open end of the horseshoe you will find the ornate Centraal
Train Station.
From one-time fishing village to independence from the Spanish in the 17th
century, Amsterdam became the commercial centre of northern Europe and was later
incorporated into the French Empire. After Napoleon's downfall, Holland gained
independence once more and Amsterdam became its capital. After the hardships
of WWII, repairs to massive bomb damage stimulated an industrial explosion,
and today Holland enjoys a favourable economy as a result.
Amsterdam is well connected by air to every continent in the world and its
airport, Schiphol, has a direct rail link to the city centre. Rail connections
to other European cities are extremely fast and efficient, as are bus services.
The UK is linked via the Channel Tunnel with regular Eurostar trains and buses
from Victoria Coach Station. The highway network is well laid out but congestion
can be a problem in and around the larger cities.
