Travelling to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is located halfway up Holland, near the coast of the North Sea, and
is easily accessible by all forms of transport. Driving in Holland is relatively
easy and the roads are well maintained and very flat. However, due to the extremely
high population density per square kilometre, the road network around the north
and the major cities becomes very congested around rush hours.
From France and Belgium in the south and Germany in the northeast, the major
highways linking Amsterdam are the E19, E35, E231 and E22, becoming the A4,
A2, A1 and A7 on approach to the Dutch city.
There are more trains entering Amsterdam from various major and minor cities
in Europe than you can imagine. The rail network is extensive and very efficient,
and travel on the high-speed Eurostar trains is the preferred form of transport
for many business people and tourists alike, due to the ease and speed at which
international travel can be achieved.
Belgium, France, Denmark and Germany all have high-speed connections with Amsterdam,
and London's Waterloo Station has a Eurostar link with Brussels Midi Station
via the Channel Tunnel at a very respectable 3 hours, 15 minutes.
A cheaper, yet slower, alternative method of reaching Amsterdam is the bus.
Amsterdam has bus links with cities across Europe, including some Eastern countries.
Eurolines coach service operates between London's Victoria Coach Station and
Amsterdam's Amstel Station, including the ferry crossing. There are four departures
daily in the summer, taking 12 hours.
Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is a major European hub and conveniently located
close to the city centre (10kms). There are direct flights here from numerous
cities worldwide, and some budget airlines also fly here with increasingly lower
rates. There is an underground rail terminal at the airport which links the
city centre every 15 minutes. Taxis can also be had to any destination in the
city and beyond, but are extremely expensive.
There are regular, daily ferry crossings from Hull and Harwich in the UK to
the Hook of Holland, just south of Amsterdam. High-speed catamarans are also
available and are good value.
