Mini guide to Eindhoven
Located in the south of the Netherlands and made famous by the Philips Electrical
Company, much of the old Eindhoven, known affectionately by locals as the 'City
of Light', was destroyed during WWII, but still retains some interesting museums
and architecture.
Once Eindhoven's most dominant building and one of many courtesies of electronics
giant Philips, is the Philips Light Tower, also known as the 'White Lady'. More
than anything else, Philips made Eindhoven a big city, and up to this day a
visitor will quickly discover Philips still dominates the city in many aspects.
Only the head office is gone. The White Lady, a design by D Roosenburg dating
from 1920-1921, now houses several cultural institutions including the public
library.
A stroll around Eindhoven's modern city will reveal a few hidden treasures
including the two towers of St Catharina, a design by master of Neo-Gothicism,
PJH Cuypers. With its impressive collection of modern art, the most famous museum
is the Van Abbemuseum, one of the major monuments of the style of the Delft
School. Here you can admire the works of Picasso, Chagall, Kandinsky and many
other famous artists.
Eindhoven has some unique specialist stores and galleries situated in picturesque
pre-war buildings. The city also boasts some great little cafés, pubs
and restaurants; and, in Stratumseind Square you can enjoy live performances.
For a break from the city, take a drive around the Safari Beekes Bergen where
you can explore one of the world's largest zoological gardens. Car enthusiasts
will enjoy the Autotron Rosmalen Museum, featuring exhibits from 115 years of
car history.
Eindhoven lies on the main north-south E35-E25 Amsterdam-Maastricht expressway.
There are trains to Eindhoven every half hour on average from Amsterdam Centraal
Station, Rotterdam, The Hague and Maastricht. The airport receives little traffic
so you may have to fly to Amsterdam or Rotterdam before transferring to Eindhoven
via train or taxi.
