What to see by foot: Maastricht

 Maastricht Hotels Hotels Maastricht

Maastricht is one of the Netherland's oldest towns and is known as a city of cafés and churches. True to its name, the town boasts over 500 bars and cafés around town. Maastricht enjoys a lively international feel, mixed with charming historic buildings and over 1,000 monuments. Maastricht is also famous for the EU's Maastricht Treaty that paved the way for the single European market and the introduction of the Euro.

The river Maas is the city's defining feature, with the left bank made up of the old city. Walk along the river and enjoy the sights, cafés, fortifications and restaurants. The banks are connected by the Sint-Servaasbrug (St Servatius Bridge), which dates from the 13th century and is one of the oldest bridges in the Netherlands.

Stroll to the Vrijthof, Maastricht's most beautiful square; the restaurants and cafés that border the square are a great place to relax. Nearby are the Romanesque Sint-Servaas church and the Gothic Sint-Jan's church. On Wednesday and Friday mornings, explore the market in the Markt (Market Square). Here vendors, some from Belgium and Germany, sell their goods.

Don't miss 't Mooswief (the Vegetable Woman) statue that overlooks the square. Adjacent to the Markt is the Stadhuis (Town Hall). The building itself is not very remarkable but the tower contains a 43-bell carillon that plays a special concert on Saturday afternoons.

Be sure to visit the Stokstraat Quarter, also known as the Roman district. It used to be the ancient city centre and boasts beautiful 17th and 18th century baroque buildings. This area is home to many restaurants and shops, and the cobbled streets are wonderful to explore on foot. The nearby Jeker Quarter is a student haunt, with many hip bars and shops.

St Servaasbasiliek's, the Basilica of St Servatius, construction began in the year 1000, but the building was significantly enlarged during the 14th and 15th centuries. The basilica's interior is rich and sumputous, with a crypt housing Masstricht's first bishop, Saing Servatius. One of the towers of the basilica holds the Grameer (Grandmother), bell - the largest in the Netherlands.
