What to see by car: Maastricht
Maastricht's history stretches back to 50 BC when the Romans set up camp near
the Maas River. Even today the Roman fortifications partially surround the city,
and in and around Maastricht you will find an abundance of Roman ruins and history
to explore. Maastricht is located on the highest ground in the Netherlands in
the southern part of the province of Limburg.
The province of Limburg itself offers a wealth of sights, ranging from castles
and historic mansions to churches and quaint villages. The scenic Dutch countryside
lends itself to hiking and walking, and is a haven for nature lovers. All sites
in the province of Limburg are within easy driving distance from Maastricht,
either as a day trip or longer outings.
Northern Limburg is a favourite destination for locals, with its many holiday
parks and quaint villages. The landscape here is lush and wooded, with lots
of hiking and walking trails. A destination not to be missed is the village
of Thorn, known as the 'white village' due to its many whitewashed houses. The
village itself is picturesque and perfect for exploring on foot.
For those travelling with children, a visit to the Sprookjesbos, the Fairy
Tale Forest, should not be missed. Located just outside Gulpen, this theme park
features children's fairytale favourites like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,
Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Hansel and Gretel.
Thermae 2000, just below the Valkenburg's hills, is a health spa and a great
place to soak those weary bones and relax. The Thermae offers thermal baths,
a sauna, gym plus various services like massage or herbal body wraps and other
beauty treatments.
