What to see by car: Rotterdam
    
There is much to see around Rotterdam and the rest of Holland, which is easily
explored by car due to the excellent road network and small physical size of the
country. Congestion around the major cities is a problem at rush hour times.
Just outside Rotterdam is the Blijdorp Zoo, which is very popular with tourists
due to the many varied and unique animals living in well maintained, specially
made surroundings, including: Gorilla Island, a Malayan 'forest rim', and an
Asian area.
Located to the north of Rotterdam and Holland's number one attraction is Amsterdam,
a fascinating maritime city built on a network of canals. Its Rijksmuseum is
world famous for paintings by great 17th century Dutch masters. The Van Gogh
Museum contains many of Van Gogh's greatest paintings, while the Stedelijk Museum
has an extensive collection of modern works.
Other important sights include: Anne Frank's House, where she hid from the
Nazis and wrote her famous diary; the Baroque Koninklijk Paleis; and Rembrandt's
House.
With its gabled canal houses, houseboats and specialised shops, the city is
wonderful to explore on foot or by bicycle. Amsterdam is famed for its tolerance
of soft drugs and sex, but it also offers higher pursuits such as classical
music in the renowned Concert gebouw, home of Amsterdam's orchestra.
To the northwest is the seat of government, The Hague. An elegant city with
extensive parks, The Hague has some superb sights including the Mauritshuis,
a 17th century mansion containing masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer and Frans
Hals. The Hague Municipal Museum is also worthy of a visit, as it contains a
large collection of Mondrian paintings.
The old town boasts elegant shopping streets and handsome 18th century mansions.
The Hague tends to be rather quiet at night, but the glitzy beach resort of
Scheveningen nearby has countless bars and discos.
