Mini guide to The Hague
Located in central Holland and close to the coast, The Hague is the official
capital of the Netherlands, home of Queen Beatrix, and the seat of the International
Court of Justice. The combination of a long history, excellent art museums and
vibrant nightlife, keeps visitors well occupied.
The city's principal attraction, located in the main square, is the highly-acclaimed
Mauritshuis Royal Art Gallery, known for its collection of 15th - 17th century
masterpieces from the Dutch Golden Age, by Vermeer, Rembrandt and Potter. Continuing
the art theme, The Gemeentemuseum (municipal museum) owns an extensive collection
of modern art, the applied arts, fashion and music.
Take a walk around the town and visit the historic Buitenhof, a collection of
buildings originally constructed around the hunting lodge of the counts of Holland.
The oldest parts of this medieval complex, the Ridderzaal (Knight's Hall) and
the Rolgebouw (Roll Building) are situated at the rear and date from the 13th
century. Also of interest is Madurodam, a miniature reconstruction of an old
Dutch town - extremely popular with children.
With some excellent accommodation, over 400 restaurants, 40 cinemas, 20 theatres,
30 museums and countless bars, cafés and coffee shops; and complemented
by a wonderful friendly atmosphere, The Hague is a great place to visit any
time of the year.
On a sunny day, check out the nearby beach resort at Schevingen where the wide
beaches and vast North Sea invite you to sunbathe, or take an invigorating walk
to discover the amazing variety of flora and fauna. For the more adventurous,
an amusement park in the woods at Wassenaar is also nearby.
The Hague is easily accessible by car and train from the surrounding countries.
When driving from Amsterdam, take A4/E19. The Hague has two major train stations:
Den Haag Centraal and Den Haag Hollands Spoor. Schipol Airport in Amsterdam
receives regular flights from cities worldwide and it's a 30 minute journey
from there by train to The Hague. The Hook of Holland sea ferry terminal is
20kms away, with good bus and train connections.
