US First Lady Michelle Obama recently took a holiday in Marbella, Spain for a holiday with her youngest daughter, Sasha.

Best known in Britain as a hotspot for sunbathing and beer drinking, Marbella sits in Southern Spain and has become a popular beach holiday around Europe. Having stayed at a swanky resort within the beach city next week, the First Lady and her daughter were joined by family friends, said a White House correspondent. It was also reported that Mrs Obama had booked into 30 rooms at the five-star Villa Padierna, which features a prestigious golf course and a spa resort situated on the coast of Marbella.

With its reputation as Spain’s most luxurious hotel, room prices for the accommodation begin at £210 for a standard room and increase all the way to £4,175 for an extravagant private villa located within the resort’s extensive gardens. Situated in Marbella’s famous mountains, the grounds boast extensive amenities and large patches of lavish gardens.

The holiday was scheduled between 4 August and 8 August, however President Barack Obama did not be join the mother-daughter duo. Instead the President, who turned 49 on 4 August, spent his birthday alone in Washington, while elder daughter Malia, 12, was at summer camp in the States. The Spanish media speculated that the president would sneak over for his birthday, it was later confirmed that he remained at the White House.

A spokesman for the White House said that the First Lady travelled to Spain for a private trip with Sasha, but that President Obama would not join them. Despite the President being absent, the First Lady and Sasha were joined by a host of security personnel and the costs of the trip could raise questions with taxpayers back in the US. However, the trip was not all pleasure, Mrs Obama made an official visit to the King of Spain Juan Carlos and Queen Sophia.
