Flybe Takes over Top Domestic Spot

by Ella FAIRCHILD on December 9, 2009

There have certainly been a number of changes in the airline industry over the last decade.  The September 11 terrorist attacks turned flying into an inconvenient mess with increased security and increased time spent in lines.  Most people have gotten used to taking off their shoes and not bringing any liquids on a flight.  The most recent changes in the airline industry have come at the hands of the global economy, which has seen air travel diminish as people choose to save money by staying home.  This has caused some prominent airlines to go under, while others have had to cut flights and amenities in an effort to cut corners.  This is why there has been a shakeup in domestic travel in the United Kingdom, which now has a new champ at the top of the list.

According to a recent study carried out by the UK CAA, which keeps track of airline traffic statistics, Flybe and its partner Loganair are now the top in terms of domestic flights in the United Kingdom.  In fact, the two carry more than double the amount of domestic flights than any other airline.  This may be a surprise to some, which are used to seeing heavyweights like British Airways at the top of the list, but this year British Airways was in a distant fourth in the amount of domestic flights in the United Kingdom.

Over the past ten years Flybe has added more than five million passengers to its yearly total, making it easily the busiest domestic airline in the UK.
