A takeover of the former Quality Hotel based in Cardiff could mean as many as seventy five new staff jobs after the re-opening. The hotel was bought out by United Kingdom hotel group Legacy Hotels and Resorts, and is the seventh hotel that the group has purchased in Wales alone. Legacy Hotels and Resorts was able to purchase the defunct hotel for four hundred and fifty thousand pounds and hopes to spend at least that much to renovate the ninety five bedroom hotel.
The hotel was formerly owned by the Real Hotel Company but had not been opened since February. The last two years have been tough on the travel and tourism industry and hotels were hit especially hard. The combination of the global recession and the outbreak of the swine flu virus have kept many from traveling. This has caused many hotels to look for innovative ways to cut costs, with some choosing to simply close their doors instead. Room rates are at a five year low, profits are down, which has led some hotels to close.
These closures are exactly what Legacy Hotels and Resorts aims to take advantage of, as industry insiders believe the hotel industry will bounce back in 2010. The hotel will be renamed the Legacy Cardiff International Hotel and hopes to reopen in November. A spokesperson from the hotel says that once the hotel is up and running full time, it will require at least seventy five full time staff, which is good news for the local Cardiff economy.
This is the second hotel that Legacy Hotels and Resorts has purchased in Cardiff. They bought out the Royal Hotel Cardiff in June of 2009.
