Passengers fight back against would-be bomber

by Alister POOLE on January 6, 2011

Passengers heading to Istanbul aboard a Turkish Airlines jet acted to subdue one traveller after he headed for the cockpit screaming he had a bomb.

The Turkish media has said the individual, a Turkish citizen, wore a mask and fought against passengers to get to the cockpit. He demanded that the plane return to Oslo, Norway where it had originated.

The man was immediately arrested at the Ataturk airport after pilots called ahead to report the incident. According to local media, the man is a citizen and comes from Anatolia. It is still unclear what motives were involved.

No injuries were accounted for and the plane was just 30 minutes from its destination in, the Ataturk airport, when the man caused the scene. Passengers grabbed him and one sat upon the suspect to subdue him until the jet landed.

The jet, which was carrying 59 people, was quickly evacuated upon arrival at the airport. One passenger said she first heard a commotion at the back of the plane and turned to see several passengers struggling with the man.

Officials said the bomb had been a fake, but inquiries are still being made as to what prompted the outburst. The man remains in custody.
