Thousands lose mobiles and laptops during holidays

by Tiffany Millar on January 5, 2011

The average number of devices lost in the UK throughout the Christmas period is predicted to be in the thousands as four million people left laptops, memory sticks and smartphones abroad planes, trains and at transport hubs during the holiday hustle and bustle.

The data was taken from a study commissioned by Credant Technologies, which surveyed all major airports in the UK and asked for tallies of all the items in the lost property department. In total, there were 5100 smartphones and 3844 notebook computers found at 15 different airports across the country.

Those that leave their mobile handsets or laptop computers and do not attempt to recover them can expect the items to be sold or given to charity for recycling. Analysts have argued that the amount of lost items is enough to proliferate data loss, since it cannot be guaranteed that once computers and phones are handed off to charities, all data is correctly erased.

Identity thieves have found lost devices to be a playground for stealing sensitive information, providing easy access for theft of personal information.

According to officials, travellers are most likely to leave their items behind at rigorous security checks as they get flustered and disoriented by the checks. Mobile insurance can only serve a limited role in helping recovery lost handsets and data.

The problem is that the majority of people do nothing to protect their personal possessions in the event of loosing them because they do not think it will happen to them. The old saying, its no use bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted applies.
The inconvenience, cost and time spent in trying to recover and replace keys, mobile phones, laptops etc is immeasurable.
The confidential data stored on a laptop can be many times more valuable to the owner than the hardware.
