Zipcar’s Hourly Car Rental a Success Story

by Jessica MCILHINNEY on August 28, 2009

The global recession and concerns over the outbreak of the swine flu virus have many customers choosing not to travel.  This means big losses for companies in the travel industry, a group which includes car rental agencies.

However, creative thinking has one car hire company reporting success even amid these trying times for the travel industry.   Zipcar’s hourly car rental is appealing to customers who are being forced to re-examine the ways in which they think about travel.

Currently, Zipcar has locations in thirteen cities and has plans to add two more, as it makes its claim as the number one company in the fast growing by the hour car rental industry, which could represent $12.5 billion.  Zipcar expects continued growth over the next five years, hoping to increase its fleet by 25 percent or more.

Although hourly car rental may not be the ideal option for everyone, Zipcar is proud of its recent success and hopes it will continue.  “It’s exciting to be able to tell an up business story in a year when many of the other businesses are either flat or down,” said Scott Griffith, Chief Executive Officer of Zipcar.

The Boston based company also hopes to expand into Europe as well as additional locations throughout the U.S.
