Travelling to Oslo

Driving conditions in and around Oslo are generally good. The roads are well-maintained
and some are dual carriageway. Elsewhere in Norway, particularly in the mountainous
areas, roads are not as good and should be used with great care. The roads to
Oslo from Trondheim are the E3 and E6. All roads leading into Oslo have toll booths.
Speed limits on roads outside towns vary between 80 and 100kph and, in urban areas,
are set at 50kph.
An extensive rail network links Norway to other Scandinavian countries and
the rest of Europe. From Stockholm and Copenhagen, there are daily trains to
Oslo. From continental Europe, express trains serve Copenhagen and inter-Scandinavian
trains continue to Oslo, offering connections to other cities in Norway.
Most rail trips from continental Europe are overnight, and you will find sleeper
coaches on all of them. Norges Statsbaner (NSB) is the national rail provider,
operating local and long-distance services to and from Oslo. Norweigan trains
are clean and often punctual; however, speeds are slow, due to difficult terrain.
Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS), Norway's flag carrier, operates from the
USA to Norway. Passengers departing from any of SAS's USA gateways connect via
Copenhagen for destinations in Norway, or fly non-stop from Newark International
Airport on the daily flight to Oslo. The flying time from Newark to Oslo is
approximately 7 hours, 50 minutes.
Most airlines fly into Oslo's Gardermoen Airport, which is situated around
47kms from the city. There are fairly expensive express trains running regularly
between the airport and the city (25 minutes), as well as cheaper buses.
Scheduled ship services operate between Scandinavia/Europe and Norway. Some
of the ships are also car ferries. All are modern comfortable cruise liners
with cabins and restaurants onboard for overnight journeys.
The Oslo Port Authority operates a large, multi-purpose port facility situated
on the Oslofjord, close to the city centre. Ferry services include: Color Line
from Germany (Kiel) and Denmark (Hirtshals); DFDS Seaways from Copenhagen via
Helsingborg; and Stena Line from Frederikshavn in Denmark.
