Geography of Oslo

Oslo is the capital of Norway and the country's largest city. Additionally, Oslo
is Norway's main port, and its chief commercial, industrial, communication and
transportation centre.
Although in terms of population Oslo is not very large compared to some of
the most populous cities of the world, when measured in terms of land area,
it ranks among the largest in the world. This is because two thirds of the land
within the city limits is not suitable for building.
The city of Oslo encompasses 454 square kilometres, 242 square kilometres of
which is forested. Within the city limits there are 343 lakes and the fjord
contains 40 islands, many of which are in close proximity to the city. Although
the region is mountainous, it is less so than western Norway, making more agriculture
possible in the region.
The climate of Oslo is mild. This is due to the Gulf Stream, which carries
warm water across the Atlantic Ocean and causes the temperature in Oslo to be
significantly higher than other places with similar latitude. The city is also
protected from the Atlantic rainfalls by mountains, making it sunnier and drier
than cities on the western coast of Norway. Oslo ranks as Scandinavia's sunniest
capital.
Oslo's climate is surprisingly mild for its latitude. Summer temperatures often
hover around 20C, but in winter fall to just below freezing. Winter is dark
and can be gloomy; however, there is always snow on the numerous ski trails
close to the city.
During the long summer days, when the sun drops only briefly below the horizon
and it never gets truly dark, the inhabitants spend much of their time outdoors.
Summer temperatures are perfect for exploring the parks and hiking paths, or
relaxing on the beaches.
Oslo's modern growth dates from the late 19th century, when it replaced Bergen
as the main city in Norway. Today, Oslo is a modern city in design and construction,
and its government has fostered contemporary art in a number of impressive public
projects.
