What to see by car: Oslo

If you have time to visit outlying areas, you shouldn't miss the Henie-Onstad
Kunstsenter (Henie-Onstad Art Centre). Former skating champion and movie star
Sonja Henie and her husband, shipping tycoon Niels Onstad, opened this museum
to display their art collection.
Nestled on a handsome site 11kms west of Oslo, the museum is home to over 1,800
works by artists including: Munch, Picasso, Matisse, Léger, Bonnard and
Miró. Henie's contributions can be seen in her Trophy Room. The skater
won three Olympic gold medals, as well as 600 trophies and other medals.
Alternatively, explore the delights of the Norsk Teknisk Museum (Norwegian
Technological Museum) which showcases Norway's prime exhibits in industry, technology,
transport, medicine and science. Situated on the outskirts of Oslo, the museum
opens on to the banks of the Akerselva River.
The museum is also home to the Norwegian Telecom Museum, where you can learn
interesting trivia. The museum also offers a wide array of exhibits that provide
fascinating information about energy, gas, oil, electricity, plastic, and the
wood and metal industries, along with clocks, watches, calculating machines
and computers.
The Stenersen Museum was opened in 1994, and named for Rolf E Stenersen, the
international art collector. The collection focuses on Stenersen's personally
acquired art, including paintings by Edvard Munch.
In its permanent collection is a representative group of Norwegian art, from
1850 to 1970. Another part of the permanent collection is devoted to works acquired
by other leading artists, including Ludvig O. Ravensberg and Amaldus Nilesen.
One of the most unusual and interesting places to visit is the Skimuseet (Ski
Museum). At Holmenkollen, an elevator takes visitors up the jump tower for a
panoramic view of Oslo and the fjord.
At the base of the ski jump, the Skimuseet displays a wide range of exhibits
including a 4,000 year old pictograph from Rødøy in Nordland,
which documents skiing's 1,000-year history. The oldest ski in the museum dates
from around 600 AD. The museum also has exhibits on Nansen's and Amundsen's
polar expeditions, plus skis and historical items from various parts of Norway,
including the first modern skis, from about 1870.
