Situated in the heartland of Europe, Poland is the gateway country to Eastern
Europe. Nestled securely between East and West, the country has a long, remarkable
history and today is an interesting and multifaceted country. Visitors flock
to Poland for its outstanding historical monuments, scenic alpine mountains
and vibrant nightlife.
Poland is most famous for its historic centres such as Krakow, Zamosc and Torun,
as well as for the capital city of Warsaw. While in Warsaw, you can explore
the old town's centre, painstakingly rebuilt from the rubble of WWII; or step
into the interesting Historical Museum and stunning Royal Palace. The city's
main boulevard is home to a greater collection of Warsaw's cathedrals, galleries
and museums, and it offers a wide variety of restaurants, cafés, bars
and entertainment venues.
By car, there are many other interesting towns to discover. The fortified town
of Krakow is an eccentric blend of modernity and tradition, and is home to a
vibrant market square. The town of Kazimierz Dolny was recently declared a centre
of historical importance; it is famous for its picturesque medieval houses,
wonderful architecture and mild climate. Poland's countryside is also home to
many quaint and Gothic villages such as Torun, Zamosc and Turin.
Poland has a long history dating back to the time of the Romans and was a strong
and prominent country in Europe during the 14th century. Warsaw was once considered
one of central Europe's most beautiful and sophisticated cities; however, it
suffered greatly during WWII and other occupations.
Poland has several gateway cities that can be entered by air, train, bus or
boat. The main centres of Warsaw and Krakow are well serviced by international
and domestic rail, as well as by bus. Both cities also have international airports
with connections to the majority of European cities and other international
destinations. Sea ferries arrive in the north of Poland from Scandinavia.
