Travelling to Poland

There are many ways to get to Poland, and the country has several points of
entry via air, bus or train. Visitors can travel directly from Europe to the
Polish cities of Gdansk, Krakow, Katowice, Poznan and Wroclaw; however, the
main hubs of Warsaw and Krakow are the most convenient gateway choices.
Driving in Poland can often be tedious and time consuming due to the long driving
distances, the poor quality of some of the roads and the lack of major highways.
However, it is relatively easy to drive between the major cities. The E 77 links
the north with the south, and the E 40 links the west to the east.
Rail is also a popular and relatively cheap form of transport to Poland. Both
Warsaw and Krakow are important railway junctions, with regular and reliable
direct international railway connections from most major Eastern European centres
as well as from Austria, Germany and France. Local connections between Poland's
main towns and cities are regular, with the train trip from Krakow to Warsaw
taking approximately 2 hours, 30 minutes.
As Poland's capital, Warsaw is a busy terminus, and flights connect the city
to the majority of European destinations, as well as to transatlantic destinations
such as New York and Chicago. Okecie International Airport is located six miles
south of the city centre. The Orbis Shuttle Bus plies the 15-minute route every
half-hour, stopping at major hotels and Warsaw's Central Station along the way.
Alternatively, city bus number 175 departs from the arrivals terminal to the
city centre every 10-30 minutes.
John Paul II International Airport in Balice is located 16kms from Krakow and
is serviced by carriers from the majority of European cities as well as from
other international destinations such as the USA, Russia, Asia and the Middle
East. Domestic connections are regular and convenient.
Sea connections are also available from the Scandinavian centres of Sweden,
Norway and Denmark; ferries arrive at the Polish ports of Gdansk, Gdynia and
Swinoujscie. Most services have car-freighting facilities.
