Geography of Poland

At the heart of Eastern Europe, Poland is bordered by Russia, Lithuania, Belarus,
Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Germany, with the Baltic Sea meeting
its northern coast. Although the majority of Poland consists of flat plains,
its southern border is lined by high, rocky mountains, offering some diverse
and unique landscapes, fantastic views and easy access to the area's wild natural
environment.
The Tatras are the Carpathian's highest range and make up the majority of Poland's
alpine landscape. The mountains consist of sheer vertical rocky cliffs and towering
peaks that plunge into deep glacial lakes.
The southern area of Poland boasts a very diverse landscape. This region is
a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with a plethora of activities to suit all tastes
and preferences. Hiking is particularly popular here in the summer, even though
the summers are short and not hot enough to melt all the winter snow. Generally
late spring and early autumn are the best times to visit the Tatras. Popular
hiking routes include the Pieniny, Bieszczady and Karkonosze ranges.
During the winter, skiing is the most popular activity in the Carpathians.
The Zakopane region, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, is particularly well
suited to snow skiers and snowboarders. Other good fields in the region include
Szczyrk in the Beskid Slaski, and Szklarska Poreba in Karkonosze. For spelunkers,
the northern region towards Krakow has a small area of underground cave systems.
The Masurian lakes district is Poland's other major geographical attraction.
The lakes are particularly ideal for sailors; they are crowded with hundreds
of boats in the summer. During the winter, iceboat racing is particularly popular
and many championships are held on the Great Masurian Lake.
Gizycko, Mikolajki, and Ruciane Nida are the most famous resorts in the area;
while the Kaszubian or Jeziorak lakes near Ilawa are renowned for their picturesque
and tranquil surroundings. The Krutynia and Czarna Hancza rivers run through
the Masuria district and offer some of the best kayaking in the country.
