What to see by foot: Poland

Warsaw, the capital city of Poland, is a major attraction in itself, and much
can be seen and explored on a walking tour of the city. The Vistula River divides
the city into two parts: the western, left-bank sector (including the city centre)
and the old town in the north. Most of the city's attractions are centred on
the river's northern side.
The old town centre of Warsaw was rebuilt from the rubble of WWII and has been
successfully and painstakingly restored to its former glory, placing the old
town square once again at the centre of the city. The Historical Museum of Warsaw
is located here, and screens interesting documentaries about the destruction
and eventual rebuilding of the city. It also exhibits many historical items
of interest from the period.
Near the old square is Warsaw's main north-south boulevard, the Royal Way,
which runs from the Royal Castle to Lazienki Palace, the royal summer residence.
This boulevard is the main tourist artery of the city and is a hive of activity
both day and night. The greater part of Warsaw's cathedrals, galleries and museums
can be found here.
The old town also offers a wide variety of entertainment. Warsaw's downtown
dining area is swiftly growing, and offers an extensive array of choices from
traditional Polish meals to other European and international fare. The Royal
Way's southern end is the town's main student area and features a variety of
cultural activities, including: recitals, poetry, cinema and theatre, along
with rock, folk and jazz concerts.
