Historical interest: Poland

Poland was conceived around the middle of the 10th century, and had its golden
age during the 16th century. The capital of Warsaw was founded late in Polish
history (at the beginning of the 14th century) but remained Poland's political,
economic and cultural capital for several centuries.
Shortly after, the nation was weakened by internal disorders and was partitioned
by Russia, Prussia and Austria in 1772. Poland regained independence in 1918,
only to be overrun by Germany and the Soviet Union in WWII.
Warsaw was one of the worst ravaged cities in WWII, although today most of
its historic and older buildings of importance have been reconstructed. After
the war, Poland became a Soviet satellite state, but a tolerant and progressive
government in the 1980s formed independent trade unions that led to election
of the Solidarity Party in 1990. Despite a robust economy, Poland has failed
to grow as fast as some of its European neighbours.
