Mini guide to Warsaw

Warsaw is not the cold and dead city it used to be under the rule of communism.
Today, with a bustling Polish economy, the city has undergone a huge transformation.
Many old communist buildings have given way to modern skyscrapers; the dilapidated
old town has been restored; and entertainment and services have been transformed
to match that of other western capitals.
A visit to the Historical Museum of Warsaw in the Old Town Square is definitely
recommended. It documents the city's history through the earliest days and charts
the period through WWII and the construction during the communist years very
well.
Warsaw is the capital of Poland and of Mazowieckie province. It is situated
in central Poland, on both banks of the Vistula River. The city is a political,
cultural, and industrial centre.
Founded at the beginning of the 14th century, Warsaw became Poland's capital
in 1611. It was one of central Europe's most beautiful and sophisticated cities
until WWII, when the Nazis destroyed most of the city. Warsaw's few historic
areas have been carefully reconstructed, but most buildings are either glass
towers built post-1989 or prefabricated concrete structures from the communist
era.
There is plenty to see and do in the countryside surrounding Warsaw. Just outside
the city are lush forests, lakes and mountains. Kampinoski Park is home to walking
trails and abundant wildlife. Just to the northwest of the city, it is easily
accessible by bus.
Warsaw-Okecie im Fryderyka Chopina International Airport (WAW) is Poland's
main airport. It is located 10kms south of the city centre and annually serves
3.5 million passengers on 60 regular routes worldwide. The domestic airport,
located next to the international terminal, has connections to the largest cities
in Poland, including: Gdansk, Kracow, Poznan, Szczecin, Wroclaw and Katowice.
