Geography of Warsaw
    
Warsaw is located with in easy reach of most of Europe. Berlin, Riga, Minsk, Budapest,
Vienna and Prague lie 600kms from Warsaw. Bonn, Oslo, Helsinki, St Petersburg,
Odessa, Bucharest and Venice are about 1,000kms away; while Paris, Brussels, Moscow,
Tirana and Rome are 1,200 to 1,300kms from the city. London, Trondheim, Istanbul
and Nice are all within a radius of 1,400kms.
Warsaw is the capital of Poland and of Mazowieckie province. It is situated
in central Poland, on both banks of the Vistula River. The city is a political,
cultural, and industrial centre as well as being major transportation hub and
one of Europe's great historic cities. Among its many industries are steel machinery,
electrical engineering, chemicals, motor vehicles, food products and textiles.
Warsaw is situated in the centre of Poland. The city lies almost entirely on
the northern European plain and is a land of gentle relief, rarely rising above
350 feet, except along the southern border with the Sudety and Carpathian mountain
ranges.
Poland is the ninth largest country in Europe, with a land area of 312,638
square kilometres. It lies in the basin of the Vistula (the longest Polish river
at 1047kms) and Oder rivers, in the European lowland and between the Baltic
Sea and the Carpathian Mountains.
Farthest to the south of the country lies Oplonek Peak, while Rozewie Cape
is farthest to the north. The major historical cities like Warsaw, Kracow, Sandomierz,
Kazimierz, Plock, Torun and Gdansk were built along the Vistula river.
Poland's neighbours are Russia, Lithuania, Belorussia and Ukraine to the east
and northeast. The Czech Republic and Slovakia are to the south, while Germany
is to the west.
Approximately one-fifth of the land in Poland is maintained as pasture and
meadows. About 27 per cent of the total area is covered by forest. The longest
rivers which cross the country northward are the Vistula in the centre, and
the Odra, which flows along Poland's western border.
