Albufeira - The Algarve Hotels
Mini guide to Albufeira - The Algarve
Albufeira
This stunning coastal town located on the southern coast of the Algarve attracts
tourists with its beautiful cliff-lined coast, fine selection of gorgeous golden
beaches and old-town charm.
Albufeira's principal attraction is the beach area and surrounding coastline.
With hot summers, mild winters and a limited rainfall, the entire year could
be spent here. Praia de Balaia, Praia de Castelo and Praia de Falésia
are three of the main beaches which extend east and west of the town. Visitors
can relax with a book; or, for the more adventurous, all the latest water sport
activities are available, including parasailing and windsurfing.
A stroll around the town reveals a mixture of old and new architecture, as
much of Albufeira has been rebuilt over the last 200 years due to natural disasters
and fighting. The small municipal museum displaying fine 15th and 17th century
Ming ceramics is definitely worth a visit, as is the town's new Virtual Archaeological
museum. Also worth noting is the municipal art gallery which holds regular exhibitions.
All types of craftwork can be found in Albufeira, both in the local markets
or modern stores. With world class accommodation, as well as a plentiful collection
of bars, restaurants and clubs, Albufeira is a great place to unwind.
For an interesting day out visit Paderne, a short drive from Albufeira, with
its ruined castle perched on an isolated hill some distance from the village.
Also, at Ponte Grande there are impressive caverns with large arches and the
underwater caverns of Grutas do Xorino.
Driving from the east or west, take the main coastal route, N125. Albufeira
also lies near the point where the express highway from the north, N264, feeds
into the Algarve. Take Route 595 to reach Albufeira and the water.
Trains run between Albufeira and Faro; and the train station is 6.5kms from
the centre. Transfer buses leave from the station every 30 minutes. Buses run
between Albufeira and Faro every hour (duration: 1 hour). Seven buses per day
make the one-hour trip from Portimão to Albufeira. Faro Airport is located
39kms away and can be reached directly from many European cities. Transfer shuttles
and taxis will take you to the city.
