Mini guide to Almancil
Almancil is a small market town located 13kms west of Faro and about 300kms southeast
of Lisbon in Portugal. The town itself has a relaxed atmosphere and is close to
the Algarve's most exclusive resorts.
Almancil's main feature is its excellent restaurants offering many types of
international cuisine. For sightseeing, visit the village of São Lourenço,
to the southeast. The beautiful church here, covered inside with ornate 18th
century ceramic tiles, is one of the most outstanding in the Algarve. Look out
for the São Lourenço Cultural Centre on the street leading up
to the church; it offers regular art exhibitions and classical music events.
The nearby exclusive resorts of Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago with their
superb facilities are the real draw of the area. Quinta do Lago is one of the
most elegant tourist estates on the Algarve; the beautiful pine-covered beachfront
property and the resort's 27 superb holes of golf are also a potent lure.
The golf course at Vale do Lobo was designed by the British champion Henry
Cotton. Some holes are by the sea, which results in many an anxious moment as
shots hook out over the water. The property includes: a nine-hole course, a
nine-hole par-three course, a putting green and a driving range. There is also
a tennis centre which is one of the best in Europe.
If you have a car, head east to the beach resort of Albufeira with its golden
sands, rugged red cliffs and crystal clear waters. The nightlife here is lively
and exciting. Continue east from Albufeira to the town of Lagos, which features
a picturesque port and a handsome restored sea fort.
By car from Spain, take the E1 highway leading on to the N270/E1 in Portugal,
or the N2 from Lisbon. Faro can be reached by train from Barreiro, south of
Lisbon; from there you can get on the regional line to Almancil. Faro Airport
is located about 10kms to the southeast of town on the N125.
