Mini guide to Alvor
Alvor is an ancient coastal village located on the southeast coast of Portugal,
in the Algarve. The village is well located, facing a natural lagoon opening
on to the sea; here, you have a choice of sunbathing on a long open sandy beach
or walking along a number of small coves tucked under the cliffs.
Most of the life in Alvor centres on the wide, fine sandy tranquil beach that
is one of the best in the Algarve and has been awarded the EU Blue Flag. Friendly
bars and cafés are also to be found here, just a five minute walk from
the town. Alvor has managed to retain much of its original style, with low buildings
and open surroundings.
The charming old town centre has narrow streets and a small market. The old
town is usually full of tourists, but fortunately does not have a tourist strip
and is therefore a bit more Portuguese than many other towns of the Algarve.
A trip to the little 16th century parish church on top of the hill is highly
recommended, as is a visit to the lively fish market.
Water sports enthusiasts can choose between waterskiing, windsurfing and jet-skiing.
Snorkelling is always a good option, particularly around the cliffs. There are
two aqua parks in the area, Slide-and-Splash and The Big One, as well as a combined
zoo/marine park and aqua park, known as Zoomarine.
Hiring a car gives you the opportunity to experience much more of what the
Algarve has to offer. Visit the Monchique Mountains with their almond, orange
and olive groves and fresh air filled with the aroma of eucalyptus. Also nearby
are the famous beaches of Praia da Rocha and Praia da Vau; the town of Portimão;
and the semi-nature reserve of Quinta da Rocha.
By car from Lisbon, the N2 highway services the southern region, and the E1
from Spain is the main artery for the Algarve area. The most convenient train
station is at Portimão on the south coast line, which is serviced by
the main line from Lisbon; from here, take a bus or taxi the short distance
to Alvor. Faro Airport is the point of entry from the air and is about 70kms
to the east, on the south coast regional railway.
