Situated about 10kms west of Albufeira, Armação de Pêra
is a modern tourist area with high hotel blocks along the Algarve's longest
uninterrupted sandy beach. People often come here to get a good tan, rather
than to study Portuguese culture.
Armação de Pêra is situated at the point where the Algarve's
coastline changes from cliffs and rocks (towards the west) to long, wide sandy
beaches. The main beach in the town is the Algarve's longest, stretching almost
infinitely to Albufeira and beyond, and the nearby beaches are well suited to
windsurfing.
Although charming and picturesque, the town has a limited supply of sightseeing
attractions. However, there is a lovely small castle with a church. Also, in
the nearby village of Senhora da Rocha, situated on the outer edge of a high
cliff three kilometres away, is a beautiful chapel that is well worth a visit.
Armação de Pêra is well known for its snorkelling opportunities,
particularly near the cliffs. There is an adequate selection of restaurants
and bars; many are situated on the ground floors of the big hotel resorts, while
others can be found in the area known as 'the fishing bay'. For a wilder nightlife,
take the bus to Albufeira or Praia da Rocha.
Hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore the area's other attractions.
The capital of the Algarve, Albufeira, to the east, has enormous pock-marked
sandstone cliffs rising above the long golden sweep of Praia dos Barcos beach.
To the west, Lagos town features a picturesque port and a handsome restored
sea fort as well as lively nightlife.
The main highway from Lisbon (N2) services the southern region, and Poco Barreto
to the north is the closest train station. There is a regular train service
from Barreiro, south of Lisbon, to the Algarve region. Faro International Airport
is nearby to the east. There are free transfers on most package deals, or you
can take a taxi to Faro train station, about 5kms east.
