Canico - Madeira Hotels
Mini guide to Canico - Madeira
Canico is situated in the south of the island of Madeira. For those wanting a
less commercial getaway, this lovely village is a great place to kick back and
enjoy an authentic taste of this magic island.
This peaceful town, halfway between the island's capital, Funchal, and Santa
Cruz, consists of the old town and cliff-top new town. A pretty 18th century
church, surrounded by a cluster of houses, is an important focal point of the
old town.
Madeira isn't known for its fantastic beaches and Canico is no exception, but
the setting, backed by huge sea cliffs, is nonetheless beautiful. There is a
broad range of water sports available, and the most common activities are: swimming,
surfing, windsurfing, scuba diving, sailing, canoeing and waterskiing.
Outdoor activities are very popular in and around Canico with locals and the
visiting population alike. You can try many sports here, including: horseback
riding, mountain biking, hang gliding, mountaineering and canyoning.
A trip around the island should include a visit to the village of Santana on
the northern coast, where visitors will still see the traditional triangular-shaped
homes of the islanders. Funchal is both the capital and the main tourist magnet;
it's a bustling city filled with stunning architecture, lively shops, superb
restaurants and friendly bars, and is also home to the famous Madeira flower
market.
Flights arrive at the Aeroporto de Madeira, northeast of Canico. The quickest
and most convenient way to reach Madeira from Lisbon is on a 90-minute TAP flight.
The Sociedad de Automibiles de Madeira bus runs from the airport to Funchal,
stopping at Canico, and is timed to coincide with flights. A taxi will take
around 10 minutes and costs about €10.
