Mini guide to Carvoeiro
Located on the Algarve, Carvoeiro was once a sleepy fishing village. Today,
it is a bustling holiday resort famous for its attractive beaches, comfortable
holiday apartments and tourist shops.
The main beach is situated off the town centre, and offers a number of cafés,
stalls and live entertainment in the evenings. Other beaches to visit are Praia
de Centianes, Praia de Carvalho, Praia de Benagil, Praia de Marinha and Praia
da Albandeira. High cliffs, some of which have eroded to create beckoning dark
caves, surround most of these.
Today, the village spreads to the east and west with basically only three streets,
each lined with bars, smart restaurants and shops. Traces of Moorish architecture
can still be discerned in the quaint older houses tucked in between the more
modern ones.
A 36-hole golf and holiday complex can be found to the west of the village
together with a well run tennis centre. To the east and on the outskirts is
a nine-hole course. Delicious regional dishes can be tasted at restaurants on
either side of the main square and the town beach.
Near to Carvoeiro is the unspoilt fishing village of Ferragudo. Nearby Lagos
is the area's administrative town and home of the 11th century Arab poet, Ibn
Ammar. Another place that is a must-see is the inland historic city of Silves,
with its fine castle remains. In general, driving along this stretch of coastline
is a pleasure, with fantastic views at every turn.
Carvoeiro is accessible along the main N2 highway from Lisbon. The nearest
rail station is at Estombar, 5kms to the north; regular trains from Lisbon service
this southern stretch of track. Many chartered airlines land at Faro International
Airport, with free transfers to the town thrown in.
