Mini guide to Estoril - Lisbon Coast
Estoril is a chic resort located 25kms west of Lisbon, along the Portuguese
Riviera. The town is famed for its beautiful beaches, and visitors are also
attracted by its superb location and accessibility to Portugal's capital, Lisbon.
Across the railroad tracks is the beach, where some of the most fashionable
people in Europe sun themselves on peppermint-striped canvas chairs along the
Praia Estoril Tamariz. Although it is a lovely stretch of sand, the water is
a long way from reaching Blue Flag status. Tamariz beach is also fashionable
with gay patrons.
The town of Estoril is a delight for strolling and the Parque Estoril, in the
town centre, is beautifully manicured. At night, when it's floodlit, you can
wander amid the subtropical vegetation. Some liken it to a 'corner of Africa'
due to the palm trees studding the grounds. At the top of the park sits a casino
which offers gambling, international floor shows, dancing and movies.
In July and August, the resort sponsors an open-air handicraft fair, the Feira
do Artesanato, near the casino. It's worth a visit even if you're staying in
Cascais. The fair runs nightly from around 17:00 until midnight. In addition
to good regional specialties, the stalls sell handicrafts and art, including
ceramics, from all parts of Portugal.
If you have a car, head southeast of Estoril to the town of Carcavelos, which
has a busy market every Thursday from 07:00 to 17:00. Just to the east lies
the capital, Lisbon, which is a city of hills and viewpoints tumbling down towards
the River Tagus. The exquisite romantic medieval castle is a must-see and shopping
options abound.
Getting to Estoril couldn't be easier with a major highway from the capital.
Electric trains leave from the waterfront Cais do Sodré station in Lisbon
every 20 minutes for the half-hour trip. Portela Airport is about five kilometres
to the north of Lisbon.
