Hotels in Fuerteventura - Canary Islands
What to see by foot: Fuerteventura - Canary Islands
Fuerteventura boasts the longest stretch of coastline in the Canary Islands. Visitors
flock to the paradise destination for its long, sandy beaches, transparent waters,
abundant marine life and fantastic windsurfing.
For the active tourist, Fuerteventura is the perfect destination, as it offers
numerous walking trails through unforgettable scenery. There are several good
beaches in the vicinity of its capital, Puerte del Rosario. Particularly exquisite
are the beaches that lie at the far reaches of the island: Jandia in the south
and Corralejo in the north.
Corralejo is the starting point for various first-rate walking trails. A four-hour
walk will take you from the extreme northwestern point of the beach to El Cotillo,
along a coastline where the breakers are nothing short of awe-inspiring in their
magnitude.
A rough jeep road leads from Corralejo to Lajares in approximately two hours.
The trail hops from volcano to volcano through a mountainous landscape. If you
prefer, you can take a right fork before Lajares in the direction of Montana
Colorada, at a marker of giant rocks.
Another walk to the right a little farther on leads you to a point from which
you can peer into one of the volcanic cones. For more serious hikers, there
is a vague, rocky path from the jeep road that enters Las Calderas. This is
an alternative and less travelled route along which to explore the volcanoes.
The Las Dunas meander is a less strenuous walk along the seafront promenade.
From central Corralejo to the end takes over two hours; however, you can choose
how far you would like to go and take sunbathing and swimming breaks.
From Morro Jable, in the south, you can walk up to an altitude of 807m on Pico
de la Zarza, where the views are incredible. Alternatively, head up the pass
of the Grande Valle, where the indigenous Jandia thistle grows. A coastal walk
to Costa Calma is another option, and also has opportunities for swimming and
beaching.
