What to see by car: Fuerteventura - Canary Islands

The old capital of the island, Betancuria, is located in the centre of the island and is of interest on a number of counts. It is home to Betancuria Museum, five rooms of which are devoted to archaeological displays documenting the island's early inhabitants. Two rooms of the museum are dedicated to paleontological exhibits tracing the climatic evolution of Fuerteventura and the rest of the museum focuses on ethnography.

Also in Betancuria is the ancient Church of Santa Maria, originally built in 1410 but restored in the 17th century after pirates devastated it. The church has exquisite Mujedar-style decorative features and painted choir stalls made from Canarian pine. Close to the church is the Museo de Arte Sacro, featuring religious art, gold and silverware.

The Botanical Gardens are an amazing expanse of 160,000 square metres of flora, including cacti and succulents which are well suited to Fuerteventura's climate. A large collection of palms, other tropical plants and flora endemic to Fuerteventura can also be found here.

A couple of kilometres away from Betancuria town is the Mirador de Morro Velosa, which offers a bewitching bird's eye view of Fuerteventura's strange, arid landscape.

You will need a car to get to the island's best beaches: Jandia in the south and Corralejo in the north. From Corralejo, you can also take a boat trip to the nearby island of Los Lobos, which is virtually deserted but for a few fishermen who live there. Gran Tarajal is a black volcanic beach with a promenade which allows you to swim right in front of the town.
