Funchal - Madeira Hotels
Travelling to Funchal - Madeira
Funchal is located on the southeast coast of Madeira in the Atlantic, southwest
of the Portuguese mainland and north of the Canary Islands.
The airlines serving Madeira are TAP Air Portugal and GB Airways. Air Portugal
currently operates two weekly direct flights from London to Madeira, and daily
flights via Lisbon. Flights can take up to four hours from Northern Europe,
and there are internal flights between Funchal and Porto Santo.
Many airlines -, including Monarch Air, Air 2000 and TUF, booked through travel
agents, also offer charter flights; and good prices can be had from places such
as Amsterdam, Berlin, London/Gatwick, Manchester and Brussels. Even flights
to and from the Canary Islands are available.
There is a regular bus service throughout the day that plies the Funchal-Santa
Catarina airport route and takes approximately 40-50 minutes. Taxis are also
available but are expensive.
It may come as surprise to many but Madeira does not have a regular ferry service
between continental Europe and the island. Many passenger ships dock here, including
cruise ships such as the Queen Elizabeth II and the Oriana, from destinations
as diverse as Malta, Miami, Marseilles, Italy and Southampton,. It is even possible
to journey from the Funchal port on these cruise liners as some of them are
associated with travel agencies on Madeira.
