What to see by car: Funchal - Madeira
Visitors to the island are usually smitten by the impressive rugged beauty
of the peaks compared with the lush semi-tropical vegetation around its coastline.
The hidden valleys and peaks of the island all deserve a visit, as do the several
botanical gardens, some of which are part of old private residences open to
the public.
The old neighbourhood of Santa Maria is where the settlement of the island
started more than five centuries ago, in the area today known as the Old Town.
Its narrow streets are paved with cobblestones and lined with the ancient façades
of the picturesque houses.
Wander around the Farmer's Market (Mercado dos Lavradores) in the heart of
the Old Town where brightly dressed market women selling flowers and the wonderful
selection of local fruits, vegetables and sub-tropical delicacies have their
magnetic effect on the casual visitor.
A trip around the island should include the village of Santana on the north
coast where visitors can still see the traditional triangular-shaped homes of
the islanders. For the healthy at heart, - a trip to Pico do Areeiro and a climb
to the highest point on the island at 1862 metres is a must.
Other places of interest include the nearby town of Garajau, which remains
little affected by the outside world and maintains a relaxing friendly atmosphere.
Its hillside setting in wonderful countryside offers stunning sea views.
Machio is a pretty fishing village favoured by more mature travellers who come
to enjoy the traditional resort atmosphere, excellent shopping, wonderful dining
and, of course, the magnificent plant-life of the surrounding area.
Finally, for those wanting a less commercial getaway, the lovely village of
Canico (consisting of the old town and cliff-top new town) is a great place
to kick back and enjoy an authentic taste of this magic island.
