Lisbon is located on the north side of the Tagus River in the centre of Portugal. It is the westernmost city in continental Europe, and lies more or less in the centre of the country, approximately 300kms from the Algarve in the south and 400kms from the northern border with Spain. It has an area of 84 sq kms. The area known as Greater Lisbon has a population of 2.1 million in an area of 2,750 sq kms.

Lisbon has a mild climate but it can get very hot in the summer. Its position in the centre of the country also means it is conveniently situated for visiting the country's national parks.

To Lisbon's south is the Serra da Arrabida national park, which contains the few remaining examples of primitive Mediterranean vegetation and imposing hills. These hills crash down into the sea, forming imposing and picturesque cliffs. The cliffs and mountains are important breeding grounds for sea birds and birds of prey, and the surrounding seas are rich in marine life.
