What to see by foot: Lisbon

The Alfama is one of the oldest and most interesting parts of Lisbon. Once
grand, it has now fallen into decay, and while it is safe to wander around in
the daytime, it is best to be vigilant in the area after dark.
To get to the Alfama, take the stairs or one of the lifts to the Largo do Salvador,
where you can view a 16th century mansion belonging to the Count of Arcos. From
here, you can walk down the cul-de sac-of the Rams (to give it its English name),
an extremely narrow alleyway, which still contains families living within touching
distance across from one another.
Continue in the Alfama to make your way to the Patio das Flores, which contains
many quaint and beautiful houses adorned with characteristic Portuguese style
tiles. Above the Alfama is Castelo de São Jorge, dating from the Visigoth
times and offering an excellent view of the city from its ramparts.
Lisbon has a number of good museums, the pick of which include; The Museu Calouse
Ulbenkian - perhaps te city's finest classical collection; Museu da Marinha
(maritime museum); Museu Nacional do Azulejo (antique art) and Centro de Arte
Moderna (Modern Portuguese art).
Another interesting sight in this atmospheric district is the Rua de Sao Pedro,
which is a riotous thoroughfare containing gaggles of children and numerous
restaurants and taverns. A visit to this area gives you a good excuse to sample
the famous green wine of the region. The district is also home to many fishermen
who continue to ply the waters off the Tagus and the nearby Atlantic Ocean;
their homes are often characterized by wrought iron balconies with bouquets
of flowers arranged on them.
Finally, the Largo das Portas do Sol contains the Museum of Decorative Art,
which is well worth a visit.
