What to see by car: Lisbon

Fifteen minutes to the west, lies the district of Belém, which is still
very much a part of Lisbon. It is central to Portugal's Age of Discoveries, when
Portuguese explorers, conquistadores and merchants straddled the globe. Two monuments
commemorate Portugal's maritime glory: the older Torre de Belém, and the
newer limestone Monument to the Discoveries.
Today, this leafy riverside precinct is a giant monument to the nation's pride.
The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, a Manueline masterpiece, is arguably the
city's greatest treasure, having survived the 1755 earthquake. For an extra
dose of culture, walk around the Centro Cultural de Belém; it is one
of Lisbon's main cultural venues and houses the Museo do Design, a collection
of examples of 20th century design.
The statue of Cristo Rei (Christ the King) over the river in Cacilhas is a
smaller version of Brazil's giant Jesus. The imposing religious icon with outstretched
arms draws the tourists and religious faithful alike.
An obligatory day trip must surely be to Sintra, a UNESCO World Heritage site
situated 45 minutes drive west of Lisbon. Once the domain of kings and queens,
along with many other nobility and writers such as Byron, it's positioned among
forests and set against a backdrop of hills, with plenty of superb palaces.
Sintra's main attraction is the Palácio Nacional da Pena, a Disney-style
folly built by King Ferdinand in the 19th century. Alternatively, the quieter
peaceful Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish castle) offers panoramic views of the town.
The Palácio Nacional de Sintra, in the heart of the old town, is also
recommended.
For beach lovers, there are the nearby sands at Estoril and Cascais, which
draw in the Lisbon urbanites and also the cliffs of Boca do Inferno, which is
the westernmost point in Europe.
