Mini guide to Monte Gordo
Located on the Algarve and situated right at the Spanish border, Monte Gordo is
a modern, tranquil holiday destination with a child-friendly beach surrounded
by farms, a stone pine forest, and olive and citrus groves.
With a higher than average water temperature and weak sea currents along the
18kms stretch of sandy beach, bathing in these waters is the main pastime for
visitors. Sun loungers and parasols can be hired at some parts of the beach
and you can enjoy waterskiing, windsurfing and jet-skiing. Boats can be hired
for sailing or deep sea fishing, and there are also a few golf courses in the
area.
The town of Monte Gordo itself looks as if it has been built on the beach,
which is not far from the truth. It is built in even quarters and the hotels
are high-rise buildings with modern facilities. The streets are wide and the
atmosphere is very laid-back. The place is currently being developed, and considerable
expansion is being planned, including a new marina.
Monte Gordo has a good selection of international restaurants, ranging from
traditional Portuguese, to classic Indian, and including the omnipresent pizza
restaurant. There's no shortage of bars here and there are also a few nightclubs,
plus a casino right by the beach. However, don't expect an intense nightlife.
A car is a necessity when visiting the many nearby attractions. To the west
is the small village of Olhao, also on the Algarve and situated in the beautiful
Ria de Formosa Nature Park. Also worth visiting is Huelva in Spain, with its
important nature reserve of salt marshes (Las Marismas del Odiel). The monastery
of La Rábida, just outside the town, is where Columbus studied and planned
his first great voyage.
By car from Lisbon, take the A6, N2, and E1 east; from Seville take the A49
and E1 highways to reach Monte Gordo. From Barreiro, south of Lisbon, there
are three trains a day with a change at the coastal line that runs the length
of the Algarve. The nearest airport is Faro Airport to the west and, if a shuttle
hasn't been arranged, take a taxi to the nearby train station or drive along
the N125.
