Santo Antonio Da Serra - Madeira Hotels
Mini guide to Santo Antonio Da Serra - Madeira
The village of Santo António da Serra is famous for the Santo da Serra
Golf Course - the official venue for the only PGA tournament which takes place
each year in Madeira. Here, golf and nature live in perfect harmony.
A beautiful church is situated at the square municipal. It dates from 1789
and has six altars. Several structural changes were undertaken between 1922
and 1928, including the installation of a large clock in one of the towers.
Weekends are a good time to visit the village as the locals set up their market
stalls along the main road.
The park, Quinta do Santo António da Serra, is a nice place to relax.
The paths are lined with blooming flowers and the park contains a small variety
of animals including deer, horses and goats.
the Santo da Serra Golf Course overlooks the Bay of Machico, where the Portuguese
navigators first landed on Madeira, and was originally built in 1937. It was
redesigned in 1991 by the famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones. He created
a completely new and spectacular 27-hole golf course in one of the most beautiful
landscapes that nature has to offer.
With four optional tees at each hole, players encounter different game levels
which may either lead to a simple relaxing game or to a more challenging test.
Golf stars, many of them Ryder Cup players, have tested the excellent quality
of the fairways and greens here.
A new and richly decorated clubhouse with restaurant, lounge, bar and terrace,
offers visitors a view of the usual training or warming up in a magnificent
practice area with two putting greens, a chipping green, bunker green and driving
range. The pro-shop has branded golf merchandise and rental of equipment.
Just 200m from the property are supermarkets, restaurants, local bars, a bakery,
a chemist and public gardens, including one with a tennis court. There is also
a mini-golf course for the whole family. The surrounding gardens are well known
for free-ranging peacocks and wild birds.
Santo António da Serra is located 18kms from Funchal. Airplanes arrive
at Aeroporto de Madeira, east of Funchal, at Santa Cruz. The quickest and most
convenient way to reach Madeira is from Lisbon via a 90-minute TAP flight. In
addition, TAP has four direct flights daily and British Airways flies non-stop
three days a week from London to Funchal. Trip time is four hours.
