Mini guide to Tavira
Tavira is the most attractive town in the flat-landscaped eastern Algarve, and
is known locally as the 'Venice of the Algarve'. In contrast to other Algarve
towns, you'll find that Portuguese holiday makers are in the majority here.
The streets are lined with 18th century houses topped by pyramidal Roman-tiled
roofs, and one of the main pastimes is strolling round the town. Climb the stepped
street off rua da Liberdade, and explore the battlement walls of a castle once
known to the Moors. From here, you'll have the best view of the town's church
spires, including those of the Igreja da Misericórdia church, with its
beautifully carved high altar.
Tavira is cut off from the sea by an elongated spit of sand. On this sandbar,
which is only accessible by motorboat, are two beaches: the Praia de Tavira
and the Praia de Fuzeta. However, the beach at the nearby village of Santa Luzia
is more desirable.
The liveliest action centres around the fruit and vegetable market on the river
Esplanade. For delicious regional fare, try Restaurante Imperial just off the
main square, where fresh shellfish dishes are regularly served along with other
traditional Portuguese dishes.
If you have a car, visit Monte Gordo, right on the Spanish border. It's a tranquil
town literally built on its child-friendly beach. The warmer than average sea
makes it a popular destination year round. To the west of Tavira, the village
of Olhao has a delightful setting in the Ria da Formosa Nature Park. For some
serious nightlife, visit the bustling resort of Albufeira farther to the west.
Tavira is easily accessed from Lisbon on the N2 highway and is a stone's throw
from the N125. Three trains a day go from Lisbon's Barreiro station, connecting
with the Algarve line, and there is a station in the centre of Tavira. There
is a frequent bus connection with Faro throughout the day, and Faro International
Airport is about 25kms to the east.
